Should we sacrifice our foods for our supplements?

(Focusing solely on the big one, Protein.)

When it comes to protein supplements we are spoiled for choice, we have shakes, fruit flavoured punch, chocolate bars, flapjacks, soups and the list goes on. So why do we have some many types, what was wrong with the good old egg?

First of all let’s go back to see what the pros of the iron ate. Well back in the 60's and 70's believe it or not you couldn't get ProMass so the pros of their time relied on: Meats, Fish, Eggs, Cheese, Soy Products, and Cottage Cheese for their protein. All of the above foods contain protein but which has the most? The best way to measure protein is in BV (Biological value).

Wikipedia quote "Biological value (BV) is a measure of the proportion of absorbed protein from a food which becomes incorporated into the proteins of the organism's body. It summarises how readily the broken down protein can be used in protein synthesis in the cells of the organism."

Whole Eggs have a BV of 100
Milk has a BV of 91
Fish has a BV of 82
Beef has a BV of 80
Chicken has a BV of 79
Peanuts have a BV of 68.

So whole eggs the clear winner, but then whey protein has a BV of 104. So as whey protein is used in supplements it seems better to have a shake then a steak!!

Disagree?... Please comment.....

Any way I am off to have nice piece of top rump!!
